Clothes are worn for many reasons including covering and protecting what is called body skin. Clothing generally falls into four categories, head wear, clothing, protective gear and apparel. A typical article of clothing will have buttons, snaps, laces or a drawstring to allow it to be worn. The wearing of clothing depends upon three things: what the clothing is made from, where it is worn and what the clothing's purpose is.
Clothing can be worn for practical reasons as protection from the weather, protection from injury and illness and clothes can be worn to fit a person perfectly. The history of wearing clothes is as long as history itself. Clothing was worn not only for utilitarian reasons but as part of ritualistic rites. Clothing was worn in ancient Egypt; in China, it was important to wear clothing that was dark and comfortable; in ancient Rome, wealthy people would go through the process of wearing the 'lavender patch' which was a symbol of their wealth and power; in ancient Greece, hoplites would dye their hair and arms black to indicate their status in society; and in ancient Rome, wealthy men would sport a particular style of dress that was associated with their money and position. So clothing has an important place in all societies, ancient and modern.
The article of clothing that is of most importance is the fabric of the garment. The fabric of a garment is what makes it into a functional article of clothing. The fabric of clothing also gives the wearer meaning by what it represents. A garment could be an article of clothing that simply provides warmth or it could be made with expensive materials to represent status or wealth. The article of clothing that is most important is the apparel itself.
Ancient civilizations wore clothing depending on their availability. For instance, if there were no clothes available, a person would dress up in leathers and metals to protect themselves from the cold. In colder climates, they would wear woolen and linen garments so as to keep warm and dry.
Clothing forms the foundation of culture. When people moved from tribe to tribe, they brought their own cloths with them to provide warmth and comfort. Clothes are woven and designed by women and used as a method of expressing their gender and their individuality. For instance, men would wear loose fitting trousers and shirts, while women would wear tight fitting clothes that covered their torso.
Throughout history, clothing has been an important part of our lives. Throughout the ages, different cultures wore clothing to make themselves look more appealing to others. As we know today, clothing can be utilitarian and used for practical reasons, but it can also be very fashionable and show off our personality. The main article of clothing, the clothing itself, is an item that everyone wears everyday.
Even though clothing can be worn to make a fashion statement or to make a political statement, it still comes down to how the clothing looks on the person wearing it. We all know that clothing trends come and go, but the history of clothing is an important one. Before the textile exchange, clothing was made by weaving fabric into thread. Now, we use cloth production to create clothes. This makes the history of clothing even more interesting.
